a look back at 2014 and big news!

Over the holidays, I had some time to look back at what an amazing year I've had. 2014 was my best year yet for projects. So many amazing collaborators and so many inspiring opportunities came my way. I want to give big thanks to everyone of you and to all of my friends, family, and supporters who have shown so much love for the wacky illustrated world I've created. I owe it all to you guys. Here are some of the projects that I ended with in 2014.

I also had the opportunity to look to the past and peel through some of my old sketchbooks. I've mentioned in previous posts that I have been working on a very special project, and this excerpt from my 9th grade sketchbook in 1999--a letter from my friend Sarah M.--sums it up.

In 2015, I'm going to be directing a lot of my energies to starting a bathing suit line! We're calling it NOVEL, because we're new, we're smart, and we're going to make some waves. I'm working with a great team and I can't wait to start sharing pics with you. Don't worry, I'm still going be working on illustrations, but now you'll be able to wear some of them to the beach!

Much art, much peace, and much love,
Happy New Year!
Laura

get out your green thumbs!

I'm excited to announce that my next project will be a very special children's book featuring the creative efforts of not one, but two Rosenbaums! I'll be illustrating an imaginative new story called, "The Puddle Garden," written by my brother Jared Rosenbaum, Co-Founder of Wild Ridge Plants.

Here are some detail and concept shots for the book. More pics and info to come!

Illustration Feature in Modnoe Magazine, Russia!

Modnoe PROfashion Lingerie Magazine interviewed me and featured my lingerie illustrations in a full spread for their latest issue. Since I am guessing that a good chunk of you want to know what I said but can't read Russian, I've included a translation for you to enjoy below!

Laura, tell about yourself. Where you did you study to be a fashion-illustrator, artist, to draw?

To tell you the absolute truth, I've been an artist since I was old enough to pick up a pen. I would rip out fashion spreads from The New York Times Magazine and endlessly copy the models' costumes and poses until they were perfect. When I was 15, I received a scholarship to attend the Art Students League in NYC, where I drew nothing but female nudes for five weeks straight! I remember that I needed my parents to sign a permission slip, because I was surrounded by nudes, and I was the only "child" in the program. This experience truly helped me hone down the delicate intricacies of the female anatomy. I went on to major in Fine Art at Vassar College and get my Masters in Illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC.

How you were interested by fashion-illustrations in lingerie, underwear and swimwear?

There is a beautiful degree of confidence and self exposure that comes to the surface a woman is in nothing but her skivvies. That glimmer of self assuredness is what makes her charming and sexy. I love capturing that moment with my lingerie illustration. When it comes to illustrating swimwear, I've always been inspired by mid century, feminist, surfer girls. They could not only rip a killer wave to shreds just as well as any guy on the beach, but also look fantastic in a bikini while doing so. I never get bored of drawing them.

Did lingerie companies propose you to do some projects for them (prints for underwear etc)? With what brands of lingerie or bathing suits you would like to make a joint project?

Recently, I've created an assortment of commercial illustrations for several lingerie companies. These have included illustrations for logos, hang tags, line books, and web art. I would LOVE to work on illustrated patterns or prints for an underwear or bathing suit brand. That would be an absolute blast.

What do you think about modern underwear and bathing suits? What do you think about trends in lingerie for near future?

The contemporary lingerie and swimwear scene has something for everyone, no matter what their size, shape, or taste is. It's truly incredible. There are so many specialty markets budding, and I believe that they and newer alternatives will arise and continue to blossom.

How do you do your drawings? You draw manually or on the computer?

Depending on the assignment, I generally hand illustrate my drawings in ink or pencil and apply color using either real or digital watercolors. When I work digitally, I use a Wacom pen and tablet to paint using Photoshop.

What known fashion-illustrators made on you a bigger impression (Renee Gruau, Erte, barbier, Ericson)?

Ruben Toledo has always been one of my absolute favorite fashion illustrators. When I was a kid, I saw his illustrated fashion dictionary and nearly collapsed. It was so beautiful yet comedic. His work showed me that fashion illustration didn't have to always be so serious. It could also make you smile. I also adore Georges Barbier. His illustrations were such fantastically beautiful vignettes.

oh summer where art thou!

It's that time of year in NYC--cold, mucky, slushy February--and it has me yearning for warm, sunny Summer. It is always Summer in my mind, so let's pop on the Beach Boys and just pretend. Here are some recent sketches that will bring you back into that good, toasty, summery spirit.

To get readers excited about the upcoming International Lingerie Show in Las Vegas, The Lingerie Journal asked me to interpret some looks from the brands  exhibiting at the show. I picked six brands to illustrate: Rago Shapewear, Hauty, Baci, Fetisso Latex, Pink Lipstick and Deja Soleil Swim.

The tiers of tears and lace on Hauty’s onesie befit the clawing appetites of a real Sex Kitten (I added the ears and tail for added kink). - See more at: http://thelingeriejournal.com/art-of-lingerie-ils-edition/#sthash.J7P0RPbn.dpuf

Happy Holidays Card for KnollTextiles

Here's a new custom illustrated holiday card I created for @KnollTextiles showing how textiles go from mill to factory to designer to consumer. The cards were distributed to factory employees and mill representatives to thank them for their support and dedication throughout the year.

Enjoy!
